Who was that masked man? Variety reports that Robocop will be returning to the big screen. Darron Aronofsky will direct from David Self?s screenplay. The Variety article doesn?t call this a a sequel (which is what it really is), but rather a reboot. I think it is now fair to ask whether it is time to retire the word ?reboot? in reference to movies. Aronofsky is finishing up The Wrestler with Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei.?He had been rumored to be attached to?Robocop for a whi

Could YOU keep up with Marla? Dream on. I rarely pay any attention when another blogger ?tags? me, because most of those chain-mail type things are a boring waste of time. You really don?t want to know my favorite color or the five things about myself that I?ve never told you. And I don?t want to write about those things. This blog isn?t some desperate form of self-therapy, no matter how many of you suspect I might need such a thing. It?s about bikes. All bikes, all the time, no apo
Library Journal carries the news of a book prize you probably haven't read much about in the godless litblogosphere yet: The Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA) named The Word of Promise?: New Testament Audio Bible, released by Thomas Nelson, Inc., the Christian Book of the Year at its recent 2008 Christian Book Awards.... The program is a scripted dramatization of the New King James Version and features the voices of actors including Michael York, Stacy Keach, Lou
So, consistent with my apparent decision to transform this blog into a movie review site (there?s a reason for this, really!), I?ve nothing to offer at the moment except a brief note on a couple of films I?ve seen recently. After praising ?Reprise? to high heaven while bemoaning the lackluster quality of the summer blockbusters (with ?The Dark Knight? and ?WALL*E? being the main exceptions), I thought I?d mention that there a couple of small but entertaining films still out there t
My Favorite things: Start With "M's" This week, I'm listing my favorite things that start with the letter "M". I must admit there was LOTs of favorite "M" that I wish I could list them all here, but unfortunately we can only listed 13. However, I did add an bonus to a few of my most favorite that was cut from the list *grin*. I'm sure I forget other favorite, but "it" will know that I was thinking of them ;) 1. War, Inc. The power of the Indy media and the blogosphere. Submitted by pale on July 18, 2008 - 5:25pm. I have been reading snippets off and on about a new John Cusack movie. War, Inc. The movie idea is an odd cross of satire and war. But, I am a Cusack fan. That man is brilliant, he has the guts to make what are quite possibly career-killing films, and he's kinda cute too. Heh. War Inc. is set in the future, when the fictional desert country of Turaqistan is torn by a riot af
Director: Tamara Jenkins Writer: Tamara Jenkins Genre: Comedy/Drama Story Vivian (Natasha Lyonne) is a teenage girl trying to live with her wacky family. They have no money and continue to move from slum to slum in Beverly Hills to make sure that they are still in a good area with good schools. The family is broke and is constantly bumming money from friends and family. The story mostly follows Vivian and her attraction to a neighbor who happens to be a drug dealer and also her se
In Sydney Lumet's brilliant "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead," Andy (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Hank (Ethan Hawke) compete to see who can be the biggest piece of shit. There's bad behavior all over the place. The non linear plot jumps back and forth in time from various points of view. I question the idea that $60,000 would solve anyone's problems, but maybe that rationale highlights how myopic and fucked up these dudes are from the beginning. No spoilers. Andy invites his b
Spent some time this morning creating my schedule for the Traverse City Film Festival, July 29 - Aug. 3, 2008. I?m a little bummed, because I was waiting for the organizers to let us know which movies qualified for press passes. In the meantime, I missed out on a few movies I really wanted to see: Frozen River, which Ross Partridge praised in my recent interview with him; The Grocer?s Son; Up the Yangtze, which Jena Ball reviewed here on Film Gecko; and a new Woody Allen flick,

As mentioned below, Closing the Ring is about to hit Japanese theatres and the promotion has begun. Below is an interview with Mischa about the film but she also goes on to talk about different topics. There is a bit in the article that mentions Mischa had a baby, lol. Clearly something went wrong with the translator. I thought that Ethel Ann is such a lucky woman being loved by 3 nice guys. So as a woman I was kind of jealous of her. ? Okay, the talk that has been going around for a few weeks now about the posthumous Oscar that could be be awarded Heath Ledger is starting to get on my nerves. ?I'm sure that I'm in the minority here and it's a bit silly to even have this conversation when the film hasn't even hit the screen yet, but this is ridiculous in my book. ? The Oscars have gone the way of so many other?prestigious?accolades?bestowed upon those in the entertainment industry that have a career under the
